Auction: Otl Aicher; 1972 Munich Olympics, Admission Ticket Catalogue, 1971.

Following the success of the first auction, Anthony Froshaug’s Typographic norms (which sold for GBP 206) I am now offering a scarce copy of the Munich Olympics admission ticket catalogue. The catalogue comes complete with the two-sided broadsheet of stadium plans and location maps which originally accompanied it, and which is often missing from the booklet.

The auction achieves two things: it gives as many people as possible the chance to purchase the item (rather than the item be listed the normal way and sell to the first person who contacts me); secondly, the auction process (the degree of interest and the number of bids) will set the item’s value. Click on the auction link above for a detailed description, images of the item and an outline of how the auction works.

The closing date for email bids is 10.00pm (BST) April 17.

VAT
Having recently become VAT registered, tax will now be added at the standard rate, where applicable, to all invoices addressed to residents of the UK or EU countries. Residents of the EU, providing they can supply me with their VAT number, will be VAT exempt. Not all printed items are subject to VAT, most notably books, magazines and journals, but some are, such as posters, calendars and tickets. When quoting postage on any order, the VAT amount will also be quoted.

The very best, most influential, ground-breaking design can be said to be a monumental act of faith, self-belief and conviction on the part of the designer. Never the product of conventional thinking, it quickly becomes a touchstone and a kind of yardstick by which to measure all else. Over time it loses none of its amazement. Viewing an original, seeing it at the correct scale as opposed to a reproduction in a book, reveals a wealth of new information concerning the design as a whole and reminds one of the context in which the work was produced. Often, any preconceptions prove to be innacurate and reevaluation is necessary, a process which ultimately informs and nourishes one's own creative outlook. A study of the past can provide insight into the future.

Poster dimensions
Before undertaking any framing always measure the original. All poster dimensions given are as a guide only. In some cases they have been converted from inch-based standard poster formats.

Condition
All books, unless otherwise stated, are first editions. Where a book's condition is less than good, I give an indication of its defects. Posters are originals and I rate their condition from A to C. A: being good, B: being generally good but showing some minor wear or small tears and C: describing a poster which has been restored, or is damaged, but is acceptable considering it's rarity. Items are priced accordingly.
